CT Scan

CT Scan
Overview

CT scan is an diagnostic imaging modality based on X rays. It generates 3D high-resolution cross-sectional images of bones, blood vessels and soft tissues. Nueclear uses an optimal highly-efficient CT scan technology in India. The scan evaluates head injuries, trauma, tumours, vascular imaging, etc. CT scans can be recommended with contrast dye. Contrast can be taken orally or injected intravenously to make tissues or organs more visible and capture high-resolution images.

CT Scan Procedure

Our CT Scan department provides the following procedure:

The procedure begins with you lying on a narrow table that slides in and out of the centre of the CT scanner. An X-ray source and detectors are located on opposite ends of the scanner. The scan rotates around you. The source sends X-rays through your body, which detectors pick up and a computer translates into images. To document soft tissues, your physician may use a special dye called contrast to enhance image quality, which may otherwise be difficult to see. The contrast may be given via IV or administered rectally with an enema.

  • Don’t eat or drink (except water) before the scan.

On the day of scan:

  • Remove any metal things and jewellery, such as earrings, chain, etc.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothes free of metal buttons and zippers.

During the scan

  • The patient will need to lie down on a motorised examination table that slides into a doughnut-shaped CT scanner machine.
  • After one X-ray picture, the table moves slightly and the machine takes another image, and so on. The patient needs to lie very still for the best results.
  • Everybody, except the patient, will leave the room. An intercom will enable two-way communication between the radiographer and the patient.
  • If the patient is a child, a parent or adult might be allowed to stand or sit nearby, but they will have to wear a lead apron to prevent radiation exposure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Computed tomography (CT) scan is a diagnostic imaging tool. It is used to detect diseases and injuries. It uses X-rays and a computer to generate cross-sectional 3D images of soft tissues, bones and organs. Nueclear uses painless CT technique to detect cancer accurately.

Sometimes, doctors recommend a CT scan with contrast. This contrast agent or dye enhances image quality by highlighting specific features. You will either be given this dye orally or through an injection or both. After the scan, your body will pass the dye through urine over the next day.

Your healthcare provider will instruct you as to how to prepare for the scan. On the day of scan, you should follow:

  • Reach the centre on time to keep the scan on schedule.
  • Avoid eating and drinking for 4-6 hours before the scan.
  • Ask your healthcare provider if you should take your regular medicines before the CT scan.
  • Inform them about any health conditions, including pregnancy, or your medical history.
  • Wear comfortable clothes and keep your watch and jewellery at home. You will also have to remove any dentures and hearing aids.

You lie on your back on a table-like bed. When the scan begins:

  • The bed moves into a doughnut-shaped scanner. Now stay calm because movement can blur your images.
  • The scanner captures pictures of the body part needed to examine.

When the exam is over, the table moves back slowly out of the scanner.

It takes nearly 1 hour for a complete scan. Majority of the time is for preparation. The scan takes 10-30.

The results usually take 24-48 hours.

CT scans are generally safe. For children, technologists use machines specially adjusted to reduce radiation exposure. The risk of infection or allergies is very low.

The average cost of a CT scan is around Rs. 2000. As compared to other scans like MRI, CT scans are comparatively low-priced.

Chest CT can be recommended for suspected COVID-19 cases.
