How to Prevent Prostate Cancer.
If you’re concerned about your risk of prostate cancer, you can find ways to prevent it. There is no definitive way to prevent this, but it is believed that choosing the right lifestyle can reduce your risk of prostate cancer as well as help maintain overall health.
The prostate is a small gonad located between the base of the male penis and the bladder just in front of the rectum. It secretes water that nourishes sperm. There are several types of cells in the prostate. However, tumors most commonly occur in glandular cells. Women share a similar structure called Skene’s gland, but they do not have a prostate gland. This type of cancer is much more common in men, but women are also less likely to develop tumors in the Skene’s glands.
Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men worldwide, with a peak age of 50 years or older. In India, the prevalence has increased significantly in recent years and is currently estimated at about 10 cases per 100,000 population. However, environmental factors and lifestyle changes are expected to increase the incidence of prostate cancer.
The majority of prostate cancers grow very slowly and have no symptoms at an early stage. With a growing incidence, studies have shown that lifestyle changes like eating a healthy diet, smoking cessation, exercise, and weight control can significantly reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer.
Various studies have linked increased dietary and saturated and monosaturated fat intakes to an increased risk of PC. High doses of diet foods, calcium, and multivitamins have also been linked to prostate cancer.
If you want to mitigate the risk, consider the following:
- low-fat diet
- Increase the number of vegetables and fruits in your daily diet.
- Increased consumption of watermelon and tomato-based products
- Consumption of green tea and soy products
- Reduce dairy products such as milk, cheese, and yogurt
- Smoking and drinking
- Increase your intake of foods rich in vitamin D
Maintain your weight:
Men who are obese have a higher risk of dying from prostate cancer than men who are of normal weight. Studies have shown that for every 5 kg/m2 increase in body mass index (BMI), there is a 21% increase in biochemical recurrence and a 15% increase in the risk of death from prostate cancer. It is critical to maintaining a healthy weight by exercising regularly and consuming nutritious foods.
However, these precautions are not useful in all cases. Some men are at a higher risk for PC and may need medical attention or treatment. If you think you are at higher risk, you should talk to your doctor.
